HOW TO SELECT INTEGRATED AMPLIFIERS

So you want to build your own hifi system, but how?

Last week, we outlined How to Select Bookshelf Speakers. This week, we'll go over how to select integrated amplifiers (IA).

IAs are the most common type of amplifiers that are used in 2-channel hifi systems for many of our customers. When selecting an IA, consider the following:

INPUT TYPES
All IAs include analog inputs (RCA) and some will have a XLR input or two. Other inputs you might need will depend on what you'd like to connect.
  • Digital audio (coaxial or toslink/optical) for CD player or music streamer with digital outputs.
  • HDMI ARC for TV.
  • Phono for turntable.
  • Music streaming for AirPlay, Spotify, and internet radio.
  • USB for computer or mobile device.
  • Bluetooth for wireless connection to computers and mobile devices, but yields lower quality result.

TONAL SOUND SIGNATURES
Just like speakers, IAs have a sound signature - warm, neutral, or dynamic.
  • Pair IAs with speakers with opposing sound signature (i.e. pair warm IA with dynamic speakers).
  • Pairing 2 dynamic sounding items will result in a brighter and harsher sound.
  • Neutral sounding IA easily pairs with variety of speakers.

WATTAGE
Is higher amplifier wattage better? Not really. Other factors determine the quality of the IA, but we'll cover this large topic another time.

Below are some of our top recommended IAs for novices.
